Winter, busting our balls!
Freezing conditions can wreak havoc on your irrigation system. Water freezing in narrow irrigation pipes as well as valves and fittings, expands, damaging them.
That’s what happened here, water trapped in the rotating ball valve of the water butt tap froze and fractured it, so our massive water butt sprang a leak! We were so cross with ourselves for forgetting to insulate the tap over Winter! Fortunately there was not much water in this water butt at the time, so we didn’t lose too much of our reserves.

We’ve now replaced the tap, using the Groundskeeper to effortlessly empty out the remaining water from the water butt, and store it in other containers, so we could easily replace the tap and ensure we have plenty of rainwater storage capacity to carry us through the Summer. To find out more about how we did this, see our blog post here.
Groundskeeper to the rescue again, making the job much easier, however we certainly won't forget to insulate our butts this Winter!
